Understanding and managing this disease is more important than ever in the world’s diabetes capital
India is the diabetes capital of the world, with at least 50.8 million people in the 20-79 age group suffering from the disease in 2010, according to the World Diabetes Foundation. This is followed by 43.2 million in China and roughly 25.8 million in the US. The World Health Organization predicts that the number of diabetics in India will rise to 79.4 million by 2030. Traditionally considered a rich man’s disease, diabetes has taken hold in an increasingly affluent and sedentary India. India has a high incidence of type 2 diabetes, which is hard to detect, and is associated with lifestyle factors.
