Avoid Heatstroke
The merciless heat wave claimed more than a hundred lives across the country last year. As the October heat beats down on you, here are simple and effective ways to protect yourself
1. Know the symptoms
Dr Anish Nelson, medical officer at Catherine Booth Hospital, Nagercoil, says, ‘The stage leading up to a heatstroke is heat exhaustion. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, excessive sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness and headaches – mostly caused by dehydration. If you notice this, raise your fluid intake and avoid going outside for some time.’
2. Dress right
Wear light, loose clothes made with natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and hemp. These stay cool, absorb sweat and allow your skin to breathe. Choose pale coloured clothes as they absorb less heat.
