Biking on a budget
Though performance bikes hog all the headlines, entry-level bikes continue to dominate the market in India. Here’s an in-depth look at the segment
With the introduction of world- class superbikes and roadsters, India’s motorcycle market is gradually evolving. At the top end are bikes like the Harley Davidson XL 883L Sportster and the Ducati Superbike 1198, while at the other end of the spectrum are 100cc and 150cc entry-level machines. In between these are bikes like the Hero Honda Karizma and Bajaj Pulsar 220, which are highly sought-after by biking enthusiasts.
The early 1980s saw the launch of a wave of entry-level bikes such as the 100cc TVS INDO, the Hero Honda CD-100, Kawasaki Bajaj KB 100 and the popular model, the Yamaha RX100, which is still a favourite among many young riders. The 1990s saw the introduction of more powerful bikes such as the Bajaj KB 125 and the Hero Honda Splendor.
However, basic bikes continue to dominate the market because of their low cost and high fuel efficiency. New bikes in this segment include the Honda CB Twister (110cc) and the TVS Jive (110cc). These are definitely not the most powerful bikes around but with fuel prices on the rise, the demand for them far exceeds that for any other class of motorcycles.TO READ FURTHER...
