If you’re keen on photography but don’t want to spend a large sum on a professional (and often bulky) digital SLR, check our recommendations of bridge cameras that combine the best of manual control and portability

A bridge camera is a great option if you’re looking for more manual control over your shots, but don’t want all the fuss, excessive baggage and expense of a digital SLR (DSLR) and its additional lenses.

Bridge cameras tend to produce better shots than compact digital cameras – partly this is down to their superior lenses, but also this can be a result of the advanced manual controls you can experiment with. As well as offering full manual control modes, bridge cameras offer aperture and shutter speed priority modes, white balance and ISO adjustments. Some even let you shoot RAW image files for extra post-editing options.

And if you’re not confident with the camera’s various manual settings, or if you’re just after a quick, no-fuss snap, then every bridge camera has an automatic shooting mode to fall back on.
