10 crore Indians suffer from cardiac disease. We look at interventional procedures and related costs
It’s been said in various ways that 2010 would be the year that India would earn itself the dubious distinction of having the most number of people suffering from cardiac disease. Back in 2008, renowned cardiologist Dr Naresh Trehan had estimated that figure to be about 10 crore, while the medical journal Lancet had projected that by 2010 India would account for 60% of cardiac cases worldwide.
It’s 2012, and a recent study undertaken by the pharma company Sanofi reveals that one in five adults in Indian metros suffer from both hypertension and diabetes. None of this bodes well for the average urban Indian adult. Our sedentary lifestyle and on-the-go fast food diet are catching up with our bodies and is taking a toll on our hearts.
