Exchanging goods
Right Choice goes undercover to test how well India’s top six retail chains adhere to their exchange policies. Find out how they fared

One of the advantages of shopping at a big retail chain is that if you are not happy with your product, you know that you will be able to exchange it. Though exchange policies vary from store to store, almost all branded chains state that you can return products (with some exceptions).
In April, we went undercover at six major chain retailers in Mumbai to find out whether they adhered to their own exchange policies. The good news is that every one of these stores promptly took back our goods without a fuss. But while every store can have its own set of terms and conditions regarding its general exchange policy and the time limit till when an exchange is possible, if the product you bought is defective or damaged the store is legally obliged to take it back even after the specified time limit. Also, you are then well within your rights to demand a cash refund instead of a credit note.
