Is milk really good for you?
While there’s no simple answer to this contentious question, milk probably isn’t as wholesome as its backers say, nor as harmful as its critics claim
Long believed to be the healthiest natural drink, milk has been in the spotlight in the last few years for all the wrong reasons. Humans are the only mammals that continue to drink milk beyond infancy – that too the milk of a different species. While milk is a rich source of calcium, a number of studies suggest that the milk of another species is unfit for human consumption – and some even say it’s harmful.
However, the truth probably lies somewhere in between – milk isn’t as essential as its promoters would have you believe, nor as harmful as its detractors say. While it is a rich source of calcium and protein, you can easily get these from many other foods. Also, as different people’s bodies react differently to milk, a good piece of advice would be to listen to what your body is telling you when you drink milk, and respect the answer it gives you.
