Kettle class
An electric kettle boils water twice as fast as a stovetop, and is safer and more convenient. And it needn’t be pricey – our three Right Choices include the cheapest model we tested
Electric kettles have been gaining popularity and replacing traditional stovetop kettles in many homes. Not only do they boil water faster than stovetops, they also come with special filters to remove limescale and other deposits that boiling water leaves behind. With a good electric kettle, you can have your pot of tea in less than three minutes.
We put 12 popular models of electric kettles to the test, comparing them on factors such as how long they take to boil water, how much energy they consume, the quality of their filters, how easy they are to use and clean, how noisy they are, and their build quality.
Only three of the kettles performed well enough to be named Right Choices. The Kenwood SJM 280 topped our tests, thanks to its speed of boiling a litre of water, large capacity (1,700ml) and overall performance.
The Black & Decker JC 68, which is also the most expensive kettle of the lot, scored the lowest due to its poor performance and build quality, and because it doesn’t come with a filter. The Bajaj Electricals 1.7L, which was the cheapest model on test at Rs.975, is one of our Right Choices.
