Research & Testing
Testing First
Right Choice provides advice based on the highest standards of testing and research, because testing is central to our editorial philosophy and no other organisation investigates as thoroughly as we do. Our testing is completely independent, following test programs that our scientists devise (and is not influenced by manufacturers). We buy all the samples we test in order to maintain independence. Our testing is done from a consumer perspective, with research conducted on the key aspects of a product that are relevant to you. We don’t just reveal if a product or service delivers well, we also expose any shortcomings or faults it may have. Hence you can avoid products and services that are overpriced or more likely to underperform. We can help you make the right decisions saving you time, hassle and money.
Data not opinion
In our independent and extensive tests on products and services we compare key aspects of product performance and specification – price, running costs, efficiency, and reliability – against exacting criteria. Say, for example, you wanted to buy a digital camera. We would look at the technical features, image quality, ease of use, battery life and guarantee. The highest scoring products or services are awarded Right Choice status and the test results are published in the magazine.
Rigorous and authoritative
Testing takes time: we play 2,000 hours of music to test MP3 players; we run digital camcorders for 84 hours to test battery life; our panel listens to 136 tracks to test digital radios.
To test washing powder, we use a spectrophotometer to measure how much light is reflected from a piece of washed clothing (that would have been covered in oil, gravy and mud stains). The more light reflected, the better the machine is at removing stains.
