They all make tall claims, but which shampoos and conditioners really clean hair the best and leave it feeling the softest? Our thorough tests reveal all

To keep your hair strong and healthy, you need to look after it. A good shampoo and conditioner are an essential part of any hair care routine. But with the number of brands and categories available, choosing the right ones can be difficult.

To help make your decision easier, we’ve tested five popular shampoos and conditioners on their ability to clean and detangle your hair, and leave it looking shiny and healthy.

A shampoo’s primary job is to remove dirt, pollutants, residue left over from hair care products, dandruff and excess oil that builds up in your hair. Once your hair is clean, using a conditioner can add softness, keep hair from drying out, and make it more manageable.

Fiama Di Wills and Dove shone as Right Choices in our tests, while GarnierFructis Fortifying shampoo and conditioner scored the lowest, owing to their inability to effectively clean and detangle hair.

Interestingly, we found that hair that was not treated with a shampoo and conditioner was shinier than hair that was treated, leading us to conclude that while these products can make hair softer and more manageable, they do strip it of its natural shine. If you want to make your hair look shinier, you could use products especially designed for this such as hair serum or hairspray.
