Speak easy
For seniors who want a mobile phone just to stay in touch, ease of use matters a lot more than loads of fancy features. Here are our picks of some basic, user-friendly phones
In the race to make mobile phones more capable, powerful and hip, one segment of users seems to have been largely ignored. Few mobile phone manufacturers have on their roster phones that have been designed specifically for senior citizens, especially those with impaired vision or hearing.
Many modern mobile phones double up as mini-computers, with the ability to take pictures, play music and movies, access email, surf the net, and even latch on to global positioning satellites. But what if you want a phone that’s just a phone – one that is easy to use and straightforward to navigate?
After all, mobile phones aren’t just for the tech-savvy. They are a useful communication tool, ideal for seniors who spend a large part of their time away from their children and grandchildren and other loved ones.
While there aren’t too many phones explicitly sold ‘for seniors’, there are a few basic requirements to look for when buying a phone for someone who is elderly, including:
-
- large buttons
- easy-to-read screen (ideally with adjustable font size)
- simple menus
- minimal extra features
- affordability.
In this report, we take a look at a few such phones that we have tested in the past.
