We give you the low down on some of the most desirable bikes in India

In India, motorcycles — and two-wheelers in general — have long been seen as cheap alternatives for those who can’t afford a car. While this is still largely true of scooters, India’s motorcycle segment has seen a revolution in recent years — one that has put performance on a par with traditional considerations like cost and fuel efficiency, and spawned a generation of bike enthusiasts who have access to the world’s most desirable two-wheelers.
India’s original love affair with performance bikes started with models such as the Yezdi Road King in the ’70s and Yamaha RD350 in the ’80s, which gradually became obsolete once stricter emission norms forced large-capacity two-strokers to a slow death.
Then came the Yamaha RX100, a bike that embodied the term ‘zippy performance’. This lightweight two-stroke bike impressed the masses with its capabilities, and ruled the roost for almost two decades, till the dawn of the four-stroke revolution. Another remarkable bike that deserves a mention here is the 14bhp Suzuki Shogun.
By the dawn of this century, fuel-efficient four-stroke bikes had taken over the market. The first star in this category was the Hero Honda CBZ, which revolutionised India’s perception of motorcycles. The 150cc-plus bike segment has been booming ever since, and has simultaneously spawned a market for pure performance bikes.
