Security software protects your computer from viruses and other internet nasties. There are several different types of protection, including firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware and anti-spam functions (see ‘Jargon buster’). Some security suites contain all these functions in one.
Security software runs automatically when your computer is on. When you install it, it scans every file on your machine to spot existing viruses — this can take more than two hours.
