Hatchbacks are the most popular type of car in India, but do you get good value for money? Read on
Hatchbacks, or small cars, as they have come to be known, have made a big impression on Indians. And this will continue, indicates the Invest India Incomes and Savings Survey released in early 2008. The survey revealed that 12.8 million Indian households could be potential buyers for entry-level cars in the years to come.
Not surprisingly, several automotive giants are showing interest in this segment. Maruti Suzuki recently released the Splash and the A-Star. Hyundai rolled out the i20, while Fiat came out with the Grande Punto.
There are many small cars, each with several variants: five Maruti Swifts, eight Skoda Fabias, six Tata Indicas. Although most are priced under Rs5 lakh, premium hatchbacks such as the Ford Fusion (Rs6.38 lakh, Delhi) and the Skoda Fabia (Rs7.63 lakh, Delhi) are also available.
