Treating infertility
We tell you what to look out for when choosing a fertility clinic and the common treatments available
Infertility, or sterility, is the inability of a couple to conceive despite prolonged efforts. Dr Nitin Narvekar, a fertility expert from Narvekar Infertility and Endoscopy Clinic, Mumbai, says, ‘Technically, a couple that has unprotected intercourse two to three times a week over the course of a year without conceiving is said to be infertile. Normally, having unprotected sex two or three times a week gives you a 15% chance of conceiving per month, which means that, in theory, a couple should be able to conceive in a maximum of six months. However, taking into account that they may miss crucial days, a couple that is unable to conceive in one year is considered to be infertile. By the end of a year, we start investigating the nature of the problem, such as sperm deficiency or a blockage in the fallopian tubes.’
Most infertility results from physical problems in a man’s or woman’s reproductive system. According to the Mayo Clinic, 20% of infertility is due to factors on the man’s side, 30-40% due to factors of the women’s side and 30-40% due to factors on both sides. In addition, some couples have what is called unexplained infertility, for which no cause can be found.TO READ FURTHER... Please Login, Register or Subscribe
