For most Indians, it’s always been a case of ‘the more the merrier’ or ‘the bigger the better’. So when it comes to cars, we naturally want a car that’s bigger than our neighbour’s. If he’s got a hatch, we’ll get a sedan; if he’s got a sedan, we’ll get one that’s even bigger; and the battle spills out into the streets, where there are too many cars and not enough space to park them.
While the whole world is trying to downsize to economical hatchbacks, go electric and reduce their carbon footprints to try and stop global warming, the SUV (sports utility vehicle) market in India is thriving. In the past year, Indian manufacturers have launched as many as six new SUVs.
If the high price of the Toyota Land Cruiser didn’t dissuade you, you could choose from the slightly cheaper Range Rover or the mid-segment Toyota Fortuner, not to mention the list of SUVs in the market that were either bestsellers or just upgraded to entice you to get one.
While it’s possible to buy an SUV within a budget, the sky’s the limit at the other end of the spectrum. In this report, we take a look at the mid-level SUV segment that has been heating up over the past year, with new additions and upgraded models battling it out for top spot. But before discussing the best-selling SUVs, let’s find out more about these cars.
