We put eight brands of washing powder through intense test cycles to see which ones best remove dirt and keep your clothes spotless
We’ve all been in a situation where we’ve spilled tea or coffee or curry on a precious new outfit. Or the times when we’re walking on the road only to be unceremoniously splashed with muck from a passing vehicle. And while some accidents can’t be undone, we think the tragedy of an oily curry spill on your best shirt should be reversible.
That’s why we soiled our sample clothes with wine, orange juice, tomato purée, curry, oil, make-up, mud and more, to find out which brand of washing powder will work most effectively to get the stains out of your garments.
For the tests, we put all the clothes through the same wash and rinse cycles in typical household front-loading washing machines, following the guidance given by the manufacturer on the packaging of each product.
Henko and Ariel tied as Right Choices due to their overall stain removal and whitening capacity. Unfortunately, even these were unable to remove tea stains – the most stubborn of the lot – which were only made darker by the wash.
