Weight gained over decades cannot be lost in a few weeks or months. We recommend you think twice before choosing a quick-fix solution, which is what most weight loss clinics offer

In a hurry to lose excess weight, you must not lose sight of what’s healthy for you in the long run. Weight loss clinics lure people with advertisements that show clients losing substantial amounts of weight in a matter of weeks or months.

The methods used in these clinics usually involve customised diet plans, exercise regimes, medication and machinery. They all claim that their techniques are ‘natural’, ‘scientific’ and ‘completely safe’.

What they don’t mention is that they also make a heavy dent in your bank account – losing 10kg can cost you up to Rs.19,000 in less than four months.

We asked fitness and nutrition experts if these claims ring true and if it makes economic sense to spend such large amounts at these centres. Wanitha Ashok, fitness trainer from Bangalore, says, ‘The only thing that gets lean by joining a weight loss clinic is your wallet. Instead, you should enrol in a good gym near your house and follow a balanced diet.
