Your rights as a flyer
Getting a refund or winning compensation from an airline isn’t easy. However, knowing your rights can help tilt the balance in your favour. Here’s what to keep in mind the next time you fly
Delays at the airport can be a nightmare, especially if you’re travelling with children. Holidaymakers and business flyers often have their travel plans disrupted by flight delays and cancellations, but what can you do if you find yourself in such a situation? What are your rights as a flyer?
According to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation earlier this year, over 67,500 passengers were affected by flight delays of over two hours in January 2011 alone. A total of 12,859 passengers were affected by flight cancellations, of which the largest share belonged to Jet Airways, with 5,547 affected passengers. Despite the large numbers, Jet is said to have only paid Rs.10,000 in compensation, while Spice Jet, which had just 1,944 affected passengers in comparison, paid Rs.8.38 lakh in the form of hotel accommodation or for rescheduled flights.
